I was in the comic store buying the latest issue of Justice League Classified (review coming tomorrow) and noticed that there were a lot of blank spots on the wall this week. The manager informed me that a lot of those sold out issues were crossover fodder for The Omac Project and Day of Vengeance (or whatever). It really saddened me: JL Classified was basically untouched: 10 issues sitting between the empty spaces where much worse comics once rested.
And I realized that the folks buying those issues had bought into DC Comic’s plan, thus ensuring that we’ll get more of the same in the future. Yay. I’m pretty sure at this point that DC Comics could toss an Infinite Crisis banner on ANY comic and it’ll sell out.
I’m not a typical comic buyer: I don’t have the store set aside copies for me and I don’t buy comics based on vague solicitations in Previews. Some would say that I’m not really helping the comics I like (I’ve been told that multiple times). But I want my comics experience to remind me of my younger days: if I miss an issue of something, then it becomes a challenge for me to find it. I like to think of myself as the antimatter universe version of a Marvel Zombie.
I feel badly for creators who are busting their asses making good comics, while lesser comics can just hitch a ride on the crossover train.

Why are you sad? People are buying what they want to buy! They are not stupid or hypnotized, they LIKE the “Infinite Crisis” books. It’s all a matter of taste.

Actually, I think they are hypnotized by Infinite Crisis: these are books that no one actually bought until the IC logo was splashed across them. I mean, that’s great for those books, but better books are getting no promotion at all.
