A somewhat pedestrian outing, really: good, but definitely not in the same category as previous episodes. This acts as a sequel of sorts to last season’s Thanagarian war, with some revenge-minded Thanagarians coming after Shayera (“Don’t call me Hawkgirl”) for betraying her people.
Along for the ride this time are Vixen, voiced by Gina Torres, and Vigilante, voiced by Nathan Fillion: two refugees from Joss Whedon’s Firefly (and the upcoming Serenity). Both do a good job, given the material, but it just seems odd to have those two involved in an off-world adventure. It reminded me of those old Batman stories where he and Robin would have to fight mutant alien dinosaurs or something.
It also seems like the script was rewritten a little along the way: Vixen, capable of becoming as dense as an elephant, falls from the sky at one point: she makes no attempt to become something a little lighter, so as so ride the wind. It seemed (to me, at least) that Vigilante was supposed to be falling and that a lot of Vixen/Vigilante parts should have been reversed: Vigilante’s leg is injured, yet a point is made of Vixen feigning an injury to get to a medical device on the Thanagarian ship. That seemed more like something Vigilante should have been doing.
I guess the problem is that when you have interchangeable heroes, the story probably isn’t all that important. Sure enough, the plot is weak and the story has some logic flaws. The dialogue, however, is great:
Green Lantern: “Sending my girlfriend and my ex on the same mission?”
J’onn: “Difficult as it may be for you to believe, I don’t take your love life into consideration when I make command decisions.”
Vigilante also gets some cute lines.
Overall, though, I was disappointed. It certainly had some snappy dialogue, but was just too generic for my tastes. However, I think at this point, anything that interrupts the Cadmus storyline is a bad idea.
