Short Takes

There are certain comics that don’t really need too much of an in-depth review. Plus, I’m really behind. ;)

Neverwhere #1

Eh. Having read the book and seen the TV series, the comic doesn’t do much for me. I don’t think of Door as being a pretty, pseudo-goth chick, I guess. The issue plods along, adding nothing new to the story, yet feeling strangely padded. I’ll probably get the next issue, but it needs to improve very quickly.

Perhaps the TV series has really made it impossible for me to review the comic objectively. Not that the TV show was all that good, mind you, but it does change your perception of the comic.

City of Heroes #1 and #2

I play City of Heroes somewhat regularly, and the previous series didn’t do much for me. Unfortunately, neither does this series. While better written and drawn than the previous comic, there isn’t much else going for it: the basic plot is that “things have gone terribly wrong,” and the characters are all grim and gritty. What a surprise. I think I expected more from Mark Waid on this, or maybe it’ll just take more time for him to get rolling.

Luckily, I get these for “free” with my game subscription, so I’m in it for the long haul.

Zatanna #2

I enjoyed this a lot more than issue #1: some great cameos and characterizations, and just enough weirdness to keep me coming back for more. I know this is a tie-in to another story, but it stands on its own and I don’t feel the need to run off and buy those comics.

Son of Vulcan #1

Surprisingly good. Of course, unless there’s an “Infinite Crisis” or “Omac Project” logo on the cover soon, it’ll languish for its six issue run.
