Unless you are a Titans fan, you will find probably 90% of these two comics to be completely incomprehensible. Hell, even if you are a Titans fan, a good 50% will still be inaccessible. And it’s a damn shame, too, considering the talent on this book.
The plot, so far, in a nutshell: the Titans of Myth have brainwashed a presumed dead Donna Troy into joining them on an expedition to destroy a planet with some type of powerful weapon on it. Athyns, a character with a backstory too confusing to explain, sends for the Titans to help get Donna back to normal. Some of the Outsiders tag along as well, for no good reason.
The first issue was so full of explanations that the plot was secondary. As a writer, Phil Jimenez is a good artist. Really, though, I think this comic serves as a warning to artists who think they can write: even though I know enough Titans history to understand what’s going on, there’s so much backstory that has to be retold for new readers that it becomes rather tedious. The second issue is somewhat better, but nothing happens in it: it’s all about the Titans hopping a ride to find Donna. It’s a comic book equivalent of waiting at a bus stop and the exciting bus journey afterward.
So, two issues in, nothing really happens. Is there anything good about the book? Well, the art, by Jose Garcia Lopez and George Perez is quite nice (Lopez is on pencils, with Perez inking), though a little busy at times. And with the major exposition out of the way, the odds of an actual story happening have increased for the next two issues. Still, I get the idea that we’ll only be getting part of the story, since this is a big Infinite Crisis tie-in.
I think DC Comics is daring, giving a somewhat minor character a four issue series and a killer creative team (well, on paper, at least: in reality, the writing needs a little more…). I’ll stick around for the end, mostly because I enjoy the characters (and I can always hope that Nightwing and Starfire get a little characterization along the way).
