What If DC Super Stars 10 Happened Now?

The final part of The Comic Treadmill’s look at DC Super Stars 10 (the infamous baseball game between villains and heroes) is up, and it’s great to be able to revisit that story again. I recall reading it when I was a kid and loving it.

But what if this game happened today?

  • Instead of being one issue, it will be a 12 issue mini-series: one issue for each inning, with a one issue (a #0) leading into the game and two covering the consequences of the game.
  • It will be called “Crisis on Infinite Bases”
  • In the first issue, one of the last remaining members of Giffen’s Justice League will be summarily executed after being treated like a leper by every other super hero.
  • The series will have two mini-series leading up to it: “Day of Tryouts” and “The Dugout Project” each giving an added dimension to the proceedings.
  • The series will crossover with every other comic, even if those comics have nothing to do with the game.
  • In Issue/Inning #2, Dr. Light will bunt. Unfortunately, he bunts Sue Dibny, causing pinch hitter Zatanna to wipe his memory of the rules of baseball. When Batman objects, Zatanna makes him forget where he left his car keys (this will, of course, have grave consequences in Issue/Inning 7: The Seventh Inning Stretch of Doom!)
  • Somewhere along the way, referee Max Lord will call Superman out, causing Wonder Woman to snap Lord’s neck.
  • While the game is being played, an overlooked Silver Age villain called “The Hot Dog Master” begins slipping turkey hot dogs to the fans in the stands. This storyline is never mentioned again.
  • Despite the tight editorial control and the four writers and six artists on the project, Blackfire is shown FLYING to catch a pop fly hit by the Martian Manhunter. Fans are outraged.
  • Variant covers for the eventual reprinting include one with a scratch and sniff feature. Unfortunately a misprinting has the scratch and sniff area on Flash’s butt.
  • In the last moments of the game, the heroes will decide to go with an all “Batman Family” infield: Batman pitching, Robin catching, Nightwing at first base, Batgirl at second, Spoiler at third (propped up). Unfortunately, when the Joker hits a line drive, all the Batman Family members have to call Oracle to find out what they need to do, giving the Joker an infield home run.
  • Finally, the game’s outcome will be felt throughout the universe: Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman will all vow to never play baseball with each other again. Batman, affected by Zatanna’s memory altering, will put into place various protocols that will prevent superheroes from ever playing baseball again. Said plan will be used against him and others, because Batman NEVER LEARNS.

I miss the Silver Age.

Day of Tryouts? I’d buy it!

A Buffy episode on TIVO for over two years? I did that too. Good thing the DVDs finally came out to free up that space, huh?
