Thursday Short Reviews

Busy day, so short reviews!

Defenders #2

More funny stuff from Giffen and company. I’m not enjoying this nearly as much as their Justice League comics, though. Most likely my anti-Marvel bias is kicking in. If you are buying this, you are probably enjoying it: there’s enough amsuing dialogue and action to go around.

DC Comics Greatest Imaginary Stories

Wow, these are great. I remember the Superman-Blue/Superman-Red story from my childhood, so it was great to revisit that story. The most interesting story, though, is one I’ve never read before: Captain Marvel’s very accurate nuclear war story: that’s pretty heavy stuff for the time. I hope they do more of these collections: there are some covers from other imaginary stories scattered around that look interesting, as well.

I was most amused by the trio of Superman stories that have him serially marry Lois, Lana and Lori, only to have all three meet their doom. You’d think Superman would have quit after the first two…

JSA Classified #2

The Power Girl mystery deepens, with the Legion of Super-Heroes dropping in to confused the already confused hero. Unfortunately, it looks like this story arc is just feeding into the Infinite Crisis storyline (in fact, I’d probably guess that Power Girl is the catalyst for that Crisis, since I’ve heard that the main idea is that a hero discovers what really happened during the Crisis on Infinite Earths and decides to bring back that history: Power Girl would seem to be a good candidate for the role).

I’m still interested in seeing where this is going: my guess is that the last-page villain will have Power Girl thinking that she has multiple origins, thus leading to her discovery of multiple Earths.

City of Heroes #4

Pretty cover, crappy story. Glad I’m not directly buying this.

There are some things that never should be explained: how Green Lantern’s ring really works, why male superheroes seem to like having young boy sidekicks, and why Power Girl wears what she wears.
