Wow. We finally get Hawkman this episode and he doesn’t disappoint. This re-imagining of Hawkman seems to borrow from nearly all the various Hawkman origins from the comics, while adding a couple of twists along the way. The end result is a rather nice episode with great characterization. Plus, we see Shayera in a dress.
The basic plot is that an archaeologist, Carter Hall, has discovered a treasure trove of Thanagarian artifacts in Egypt, one of which (the famed Absorbascon) has him believing that he’s the reincarnated Katar Hol and that Shayera is a reincarnated Shayera Hol and that they belong together. Or, as Batman puts it “He’s a stalker.” Since this is a Hawkman story, it wouldn’t be complete without the Shadow Thief, who tags along hoping to grab the treasure for himself.
One of the things I liked about this episode was that the writers didn’t cop out and have the new Hawkman save Shayera from some manufactured danger: instead, she saves him. We also get a jealous Green Lantern, wonder what Shayera’s relationship with Hawkman might mean for the future, considering he knows they eventually have a son together.
Batman has some choice dialogue in this episode, including a very amusing exchange with Shayera:
Batman: He (Carter Hall) frequents the “I Hate Hawkgirl” bulletin boards.
Hawkgirl: That doesn’t mean… boards? How many are there?
Overall, this continues the strong start of the season from the previous episode. I’m feeling giddy about future episodes.
Next episode: Supergirl goes clothes shopping?
