Justice League Unlimited: Chaos at the Earth’s Core

An episode that introduces Mike Grell’s Warlord to the animated world. Unfortunately, the episode really just uses the character and his world as a backdrop though, rather than focusing the episode on him. In fact, the whole episode sorta stinks of an Afterschool Special or a Very Special Episode. Stargirl learns and important lesson about something or other I guess.

The basic plot: after the JL rescues Japan from a giant flying turtle (how can I not love that!), Stargirl shows her intense jealousy of Supergirl (who now wears a costume more like the current incarnation of the character does in the comics). After being pulled into Skartaris (a land forgotten by time inside the center of the Earth), Green Lantern, Stargirl, Stripes and Supergirl must help Travis Morgan, the Warlord, battle against an evil wizard, Deimos. Deimos has Silver Banshee and Metallo on his side as well. Supergirl is depowered in the magical land of Skartaris, yet still fights, showing Stargirl that it isn’t the powers that make the hero. Or something like that.

See Warlord and his cast of supporting characters was pretty neat, but none of them get more than a few seconds of time: even Travis Morgan, the Warlord himself, gets scant time. I’d rather have seen a few episodes with just the Warlord cast, really (what a great series that was).

Throughout the episode, I just had a nagging feeling that this episode was just pimping out characters that DC wanted to promote: there’s a new Warlord series coming, and Supergirl also just got a new comic. And since the whole plot was generic enough that it didn’t matter that the Warlord was in it at all, I have to say this episode was a disappointment.

Next episode: even more obscure characters. Let’s hope they aren’t just window dressing.
