Toys I Wish I Still Had #5: Silver Knight/Gold Knight

The Silver Knight.

Strictly speaking, I didn’t actually own either the Silver or Gold Knight (or Johnny West, for that matter). They belonged to my brothers, John and Tom. But, as I’ve mentioned, I inherited various toys from them. Sometimes, though, they really didn’t want to give them up. The Marx Noble Knights were such cool toys that after playing with them, you won’t want your younger brother screwing them up.

Though I know now that the knights had names (Stuart and Gordon), at the time I just knew them as the Silver Knight and the Gold Knight. They were taller than G.I. Joes, and much denser: they were made of a really heavy plastic (which contributed to their longevity and hardiness, compared to other cheap plastic toys of the time). Their hands were somewhat pliable, allowing them to hold weapons easily.

But the best thing about the knights was their armor. Both came with snap on armor, multiple pieces. And the armor was interchangeable between the two knights. If that wasn’t cool enough, each section of the armor was also swappable, so you could match the front of the Gold Knight’s breastplate with the back of the Silver Knight’s breastplate. Truth be told, it was like playing with a male Barbie. So I’d put the gold armor on the Silver Knight or silver on the Gold Knight, etc. A line of horses made for the Knights was also sold, but we never had one (too bad, because they looked cool and also had armor).

I had the hand-me down Johnny West cowboy version made from similar materials and made by the same company. Johnny was skinnier than the knights, and the armor really didn’t fit on him very well, and Johnny’s vest and chaps weren’t really easy to get on the knights, either. But I tried.

We were able to get the knights into some of the G.I. Joe clothing, though, and the Silver Knight spent most of his time in an orange Adventure Team jumpsuit. It was a little short in the arms and legs, but looked cool.

More recently, new versions of some of the Noble Knights line have been released: made from the same mold, but using more current materials.
