There are various comic-related things that I just don’t get. I thought I’d share a few.
- Paul Pope’s Batman: Year 100: is there something wrong with me that I hate this so much? The art doesn’t do anything for me, the writing certainly isn’t anything special, the pacing is awful, and it’s hard to get excited about a Batman with scary dentures. Why do people like this?
- Nextwave: yeah, it’s okay, sure, and I’m buying it, but I don’t get why people think that Dirk Anger is so cool or that this comic is some gem of humor. Yes, it is funny. It’s also about a five-minute toilet read.
- Why does the clerk at the comic store I go to always spoil at least one of the comics I’m buying every single time? I bought the first issue of the “One Year Later” Teen Titans, and he spoiled the whole plot while I was checking out.
- Who buys all those crazy statues in comic stores? Why don’t they spend their money on Martian Manhunter action figures, like normal people?
- Isn’t Marvel’s Civil War event really just a rehash of all the “make mutants register storylines”? Do mutant superheroes have to register, or are they covered already?

I like NEXTWAVE because it’s absolutely without pretension. It’s just a big, dumb, goofy book where things explode. In a market saturated with grim and mopey six-issue arcs, it is a sanctuary of fun. I read it for the same reason that I’ll go see Snakes On a Plane in the cinema.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who is perplexed by those crazy statues. I guess I’d just rather buy some more stories than a paper-weight.
