Free Comic Book Day

As usual, I avoided Free Comic Book Day. I’m not sure why I avoid it: I mean, come on, free comics, but I really just don’t get very excited by it. All I can think about is how annoyed I’d get at other people in the store getting in my way and kids running around higgly-piggly screaming about Spider-Man. So instead of going to the comic store, I fixed my barbecue grill and cleaned up around the house.

I realized that Free Comics Day really isn’t for me, anyhow. I sample a fair number of comics (yes, even non-superhero comics, believe it or not) now and again. But I’m not the target demographic: I’ve already got a comic habit and Free Comic Book Day seems to be more about addicting new people (with a secondary effect of getting existing comic book readers to try something new).

I did enjoy reading the reviews that many folks have written about the free comics that were given away: Dorian at postmodernbarney.com covers them in an easy to understand scale; Comics Worth Reading’s Johanna has reviews of the gold sponsors’ comics as well as the silver sponsors’ comics: part 1 and part 2.

I also enjoy what Yet Another Comics Blog is doing: Free Comic Book Month. It’s a great idea and I love reading Dave’s analysis of what people read and what else they might enjoy.
