Last week, as I mentioned, there was a cornucopia of comic riches. This week, though, just one comic. Seems like a good idea to do a quick review of the past four weeks of 52, since issue 4 was the only comic I picked up this week.
In four issues, 52 hasn’t managed to tell any complete stories yet, but there’s still a lot of interesting things going on: scientists are being kidnapped, Ralph is taking a journey, and the Question and Renee Montoya are quite the entertaining couple. And Booster’s being an ass (well, a bigger ass than usual). I also enjoy the weaving of minor heroes into the proceedings, like Halo showing up in issue 4 (and it looks like we’ll finally get to see what happened to Donna Troy’s space team, a plot that was just dropped in Infinite Crisis).
Another of the enjoyable things about 52 is the art. I love Keith Giffen’s breakdowns: say what you will, but he knows how to layout a story. It reminds me of his work in the rebooted Legion many years back: heroes with strong jaws, action that’s clear and concise.
So after these first four issues, I’m likely to continue buying for at least another month. I love it when minor characters get a chance to shine, and this series is a great, high-profile way to introduce some of the history of the DC Universe to new readers. If it can continue that, then I’ll make it through the whole year.
