Everyone else seems to be on the Batwoman story, so what the heck. My totally informed opinion is that I don’t really care if the new Batwoman is a lesbian as long as the writers tell good stories. From a continuity perspective, I’d like to see how Bette Kane fits into the whole story now, and I’d love to see a Batwoman and Flamebird team-up at some point.
I also have to applaud DC Comics’ ability to get so much press on something so minor: if you ask a random sampling of people who Batwoman is, you’d probably get 90% blank stares, 9% thinking about Yvonne Craig as Batgirl, .5% who know Kathy Kane, and .5% who know Kathy Kane and can explain all her incarnations, pre and post any number of retcons. I think I might be in that last .5%. On CNN.com, the Batwoman story has been on the front page for the past couple of days, and it’s all over other news sources not to mention other blogs. Gotta love slow news weeks.
I also like the costume, at least the one over to the right (at other times, the black is shown as blue, which doesn’t look nearly as cool). The design echoes a few things: the original Batwoman costume, with the red cape and up-swept mask; the revamped Batgirl costume, with the belt, boots, and gloves; and the Batman Beyond costume, for the Bat-symbol and overall colors. It’s a nice, clean look.
Now they need to bring back Ace, the Bat-Hound!
