I’ve decided to change how I do reviews. Normally, I end up doing a few reviews a week (if even that), but work and life have conspired to interrupt any regular in-depth reviews I might want to do. So I’ve decided on a new method. Each week I buy a certain number of comics. When I get home, I arrange them in a stack based upon my first impression of their quality: comics I think will be good go to the bottom of the stack, those I think will be worse go to the top. Then I read them.
Sometimes, my first impressions are pretty accurate. Other times, of course, I’m really really wrong. So each week, I’m going to post my comics list in order of how I think I’ll enjoy them. Then I’ll post a revised list after reading them.
To start off this week, I’ll do both my initial list and the revision. Next week, I’ll post my first impressions, then follow it up later in the week. I’ll still also do in-depth reviews when the feeling hits or if the material warrants (for example, Nightwing is so bad I just have to write more about it).
So, this week’s first impressions list, from worst to best, with commentary:
- Shadowpact #2: The first issue was just setting things up, and I figured that the second would be more of the same.
- Robin #151: Final part of the Cassandra Cain arc, which has been hit or miss.
- 52: Week Seven: Playing the law of averages, one issue every month tends to be good, and Week Five and Six weren’t that good.
- Flash #1: Crossing my fingers.
- Birds of Prey #95: Final issue of a great arc.
- All-Star Superman #4: Consistently fun.
Now, after having read them, here’s my list retcon, so to speak, from worst to best:
- 52: Week Seven: Uhg. Something needs to happen in this comic, and soon.
- Flash #1: Wow, this wasn’t very good at all. It’s like every reboot of every well-known character: introduce the legacy, introduce new character who might become the new version, toss in explosions.
- Robin #151: Eh. I’m tired of good characters who are now evil or deranged. I never liked Cassandra Cain, anyhow, and now she just seems to be a Lynx replacement.
- Shadowpact #2: It’s still set up, but funny and intriguing at the same time.
- Birds of Prey #95: A good, if somewhat predictable end of the arc.
- All-Star Superman #4: Another fun story that just left me smiling afterwards.
So the big disappointment of the week was Flash #1: it just didn’t interest me at all. The biggest surprise was Shadowpact #2 with its group of villains that are possibly more interesting than the heroes.
