Why Would I Pay $3 For This?

Franklin Richards #1

Last week, I picked up the Franking Richards: Super Summer Spectacular, since the buzz around seemed generally good. So I plopped down my three bucks. I think it was probably worth about a third of that.

I’m not sure who the audience is for this comic. If you are me, then you’ve probably already read Calvin and Hobbes, and these stories attempt to mimic the art style and the plots of that strip a little too much for my comfort. Except that Bill Watterson could do in four panels what Chris Eliopoulos and Marc Summerak stretch out over multiple pages. The first story is a perfect example of a four panel joke stretched to five pages. The other stories follow the same format: take a joke, proceed to bash it into the ground.

Yes, it’s cute. Yes, it has Herbie. But it just doesn’t do anything for me. Were I younger, I’d pass this up based solely on price: $3 is a lot for a comic that’s seemingly targeted to kids. It would make more sense to drop it down to a dollar if you want to get it into the hands of kids.
