Last Comic in the Pile, July 26th, Final

I’ve decided to change the format for these and just update one post, rather than have two separate posts. Should be a little prettier and easier to follow, too. Or a mess. Who knows.

  Initial Ranking Final Ranking Change
7 Supergirl #8
A no-brainer. You know, I’m thinking that maybe they are making an incomprehensible Nightwing and Flamebird story as an homage to the Silver Age? Otherwise, I don’t know why this exists. It’s a waste of Power Girl.
Nightwing #122
Wow, Nightwing can’t even manage to be better than stinking Supergirl. I’ll have a more in-depth review later this week, but let’s just say that not a lot happens that makes any sense.

6 Nightwing #122
Ah, the "finale of our chaotic story" if I recall the blurb. This might be slightly better than Supergirl, but it’s like the choice between poop and barf, either way, it still stinks.
Supergirl #8
Slightly better than I expected, but there’s too much explanation while still leaving too much unexplained. I’m glad that Power Girl and Supergirl managed to avoid the cliche fight (gotta love the cover that promises more than actually happens), but this arc is not good.

5 52: Week Twelve
Nice cover, but I’m not expecting much.
American Way #6
So I guess racism is the whole focus of the series. Too bad, since I think it could have done it in a much more subtle way. The New American seems to turn into a stereotypical "Fight the Power" figure, and even wears a beret. Bleh.

4 American Way #6
If they can get away from the overdone racism angle, there’s probably a good story here.
Batman #655
Wow, what a disappointment. I guess Batman cleaned up Gotham in a few weeks, now he’s off to London. It’s all set-up, so hopefully it’ll pick up next issue. But Morrison doesn’t seem to do anything all that interesting yet.

3 Birds of Prey #96
Now that the team is sorta all back together, time for some new complications. Should be good.
52: Week Twelve
Dammit. Every time I think I can drop this comic, an issue comes out that really interests me enough to stick around. The Black Adam story is front and center here, with a new member of the Marvel Family: Isis. We also get a cool retelling of Wonder Woman’s post-Infinite Crisis origin. Pretty.

2 Batman #655
I hear some Scottish chap named Morrison is taking over this title for a little while. I wish Animal Man would guest star.
Birds of Prey #96
I love "Day in the Life" type issues, and the first half of this issue is a great example of that type of story. I like that there’s people who still remember Ted Kord. We also get a cliffhanger ending that should cause a lot of speculation.
+1
1 Astro City: Samaritan Special
Yay, Astro City! I’m also a sucker for stark white cover backgrounds.
Astro City: Samaritan Special
This issue definitely didn’t disappoint. We learn about the Lex Luthor to Samaritan’s Superman: the Infidel. The two fight a neverending battle to shape reality, but have come to the realization that the fight benefits neither. Yet they still can’t pull away from it.

The big loser this week was Batman #655: I expected more. The big winner, surprisingly, was 52, which has earned a reprieve from being dropped once again.
