Last Comic in the Pile, August 9th

So what goodies do we have in store this week? A little bit of everything.

Update: Well, not the strongest week, but consistent.

  Initial Ranking Final Ranking Change
4 52: Week Fourteen
I’m hedging my bets: the past couple of issues were good, but not great.
52: Week Fourteen
Whee, we’re back to building up various plots that have been simmering for a while. Renee and the Question end up in Khandaq and are predictably apprehended by Black Adam’s troops. Steel obsesses about his failures as a father as he mutates. And, in the more interesting story, Doc Magnus finds a way to resurrect the Metal Men, as T.O. Morrow escapes. There’s nothing terrible in this issue, but it is back to the slow moving plot.

3 Martian Manhunter #1
Sigh. Along with Nightwing, the Martian Manhunter is one of my favorite characters (for some reason, I have more Martian Manhunter action figures than a normal human should have). The problem with both of them is that there aren’t any writers that can do them justice. In J’onn’s case, writers can rarely get past stories concerning Martians. It would be the equivalent of having every Superman story dealing with Krypton. Anyhow, it’s another bite at the apple for this character.
Firestorm #28
I think this issue tried to do way too much. We’ve got a fight with a weird creature, some bonding between Jason and the Professor, Jason angst with his parents, and the return of Mikhail, who was once part of what I consider one of the best portrayals of Firestorm back in the early 90s. He now looks dopey. And a fight with atomic powered robots. Nothing really gels for me this month.

2 Firestorm #28
Now that the status quo has been restored (somewhat), I’m interested to see where the story goes from here. So far, this comic has had some good, competent storytelling.
Martian Manhunter #1
Much better than I expected and a lot better than the preview in Brave New World. I’m still not wild about the costume/look change, and the "people fear my non-human appearance" gets a little old (I mean, come on, it’s no worse than other heroes). I’m just concerned that we have, once again, another Martian-related storyline. Can’t anyone do something different with J’onn? Please?
+1
1 Secret Six #3
Ah, Gail Simone can usually do no wrong, so it’s not a big leap to make this my pick for the week. Even a weak Simone issue is better than most writers’ strong issues. Plus, I love Catman.
Secret Six #3
As predicted, a good issue. We are getting more answers about the bad luck the team’s been having, a surprise betrayal, and a lot of soul-searching and cruelty. Unfortunately, it also has the single stupidest line of dialogue for the week, as Deadshot says "It’d be stupid to face someone as smart as Lady Vic and her mercs like this." Uh, Lady Vic? Lame Nightwing villain? Smart? I guess Superboy did some reality-wall smashing near her and she got a brain. Reminds me I need to do some posts on the lame Nightwing villains of Chuck Dixon. Anyhow, buy this comic.

So Martian Manhunter beats Firestorm this month. Surprising. What’s not so surprising is the slow moving 52: what a frustrating comic.
