Saving Starfire

I’m going to start this campaign early, since I’m getting bad vibes from both 52 and Teen Titans and Dan Didio that my favorite Tamaranian princess might not be long for the world. And I think it would be a shame. It seems to me that 52 is going to build her up and then kill her off (much like Supergirl in the Crisis).

So I’m trying to pre-empt Starfire’s possible demise. Why? Because I love the character. Here some reasons why I think Starfire is cool and should stick around.

  • Starfire is unique (well, unless they keep drawing Blackfire flying). She’s got a recognizable look. Also, she isn’t a copy of a male hero.
  • She has room to grow: we’ve really only seen Kori in relationship to other groups. I’d love to see how she manages without a team.
  • She’s got strong ties to both Nightwing and Donna Troy and could easily fit in to either’s comic (well, except that Donna’s not likely to be Wonder Woman for long).
  • With the Omega Men returning, it is likely that Ryand’r will be showing up. There an opportunity for a family reunion (plus, you can argue that Ryand’r is a derivative of Kori: that’s also a rarity in comics, a male derivative of a female hero).
  • It would be stupid to have Starfire built up as a character in the Teen Titans cartoon (as she has been), only to have her counterpart in the "real" DC Universe die. Seems a better move would be to use her to try and gain new readership.
  • If Starfire is dead, there would be no chance of Starfire, Miss Martian, Katma Tui, and Shadow Lass teaming up to take out Mongul and Despero. That story would kill the colorist.
  • Starfire’s modeling career was more plausible than either Ronnie Raymond’s or Dick Grayson’s.
  • Kori looks really cute wearing Animal Man’s costume. Okay, not really a great reason, but come on, she’s cute!
  • I’m still holding out for Nightwing and Starfire getting together. Still my favorite superhero couple.
  • Is killing yet another female superhero really something that DC should be doing?

I agree. Sadly, I read in a recent edition of Back Issue that DC still planned to off the original Supergirl even if the Helen Slater movie had been a tremendous hit – which makes no sense to me but there you are.

Starfire is a great character with unlimited potential – as the cartoon proved. Hope your bad feelings turn out to be wrong.

Being new to the comic book scene, I was not aware of the peril that Starfire faced. I remember her from the earliest Teen Titans. It would be a shame to kill her off. Have the writers run out of ideas so much that they must kill the characters off to deliver a storyline?

Generally, most writers use the “kill em off” crutch way more than they should, and I don’t see it ending anytime soon. Stupid DC with their Infinite Didio.

I would be very angry if they killed off Starfire, but even if they did, they could revive her and make her stronger than
ever! That would be a good possibilty. Also, I would love to see Nightwing and Starfire get married and have their daughter
NightStar appear like in Kingdom Come.

I’m glad that someone is sharing my concerns about the recent telltale signs that my favorite femchar in the DC universe is getting ready to push up daises. She has so much before her, and making her a focus character again would be interesting.
I really want to see her become a momma, too. :(

I disagree with the idea of killing starfire off. I think she’s had a big part in the teen titans and in the outsiders. She’s also a part of Nightwings life and I can’t believe that they’d consider to kill her off. I thought the future batwoman promised Kory that she’d have a wonderful future with Dick. If they’d killed her than they’d be going against their own writing. Plus I’d also like to see her have a child or two. I like her character a lot and since she’s from another planet they can do a lot with her. It would be weird if they killed her after what she and dick went through. That’s my opinion and I’m staying with it!
