Quick and Dirty Reviews

I’m fighting off a nasty cold of some type, my head is pounding, and I’ve got a rash across about 60% of my body. Must be December. So this week will be short and sweet with the blogging. My goal for next week is to actually have my scanner set up (moving is a pain in the ass) and to be rash-free.

Detective Comics #826

The story isn’t the problem this issue: it’s the art. There’s a page with Tim, Dick and Bruce. I think. Dick looks no different than Bruce, and there’s no indication who any of them are, much less a time frame (I’m assuming the scene takes place during the 52 timeline. I think the penciller, Don Kramer, should stick to costumes: his faces are pretty annoying. His Joker is nice, though.

Overall, though, this was really just a "Joker is crazy" story. Wow. No shit.

Supergirl #12

While not a bad issue, it just seemed disconnected. It felt more like pimping Terra than a Supergirl comic, though I did like the comparisons: Terra is a hero who is doing the job because she feels obligated while Supergirl, despite being the cousin of the greatest hero, doesn’t know what she wants. It’s an interesting take on the character, which I’m warming up to.

52: Week Thirty-One

Hey, Starfire is still alive. Yay. That’s pretty much the only reason I get this comic, I think. I liked the funny Robin origin backup story: the artists apparently couldn’t be bothered to research what an "R-shaped shuriken" looks like, so tossed a dorky Robin logo onto a normal shuriken.

Mystery in Space #4

The events in this week’s 52 reverberate in this comic: I guess Lady Styx gets out of 52 alive. Anyhow, I like space operas and this is a pretty good one so far.

Manhunter #26

Still a great read. Buy this comic.

Nightwing #127

Under Marv Wolfman, Nightwing has become a lot more readable. I hesitate to say that it’s good, but it’s definitely improving. However, I hate it when Nightwing gets the crap beaten out of him way too easily. Plus, I’m not so sure that attempting to dig 30 feet horizontally would be that easy, but I’ve never done it.

Atom #6

I like this comic a lot: it’s got wacky science, civilizations on the backs of dogs, stupid overconfident supervillains, etc. It’s like a time pool of fun.

Justice Society of America #1

I think that Batman goes around to every super group and lays the same speech on them: "The JLA is a strike force. (Fill-in-the-blank) is a family." I think he’s trying to monopolize strike forces. I think he argued the same thing to the Titans. I bet he did it to the Marvel Family, too.

Batman: "Billy, the Justice League is a strike force. The Marvel Family is a family."
Captain Marvel: "You really are the world’s greatest detective."

When did Jesse Quick marry/hook up with Rick Tyler? Was that before or after her apparent lobotomy?

Uh oh, my snarkiness is combining with my head cold and rash, making me annoyed. Time to sleep.
