Late Holiday Review Extravaganza

I’m behind on reviews, as usual. Too much work, too many holidays, too much craziness. I hope next year is a little calmer. Anyhow, here’s some quicky reviews.

Teen Titans #42

Ah, a Kid Devil story not so long after the Blue Devil story in Shadowpact a couple of months ago. This is a standard origin story, for the most part: how he started out the typical wannabe sidekick, but became a demon in a pact with Neron. It’s not bad, except that it is reminiscent of Raven’s backstory: hero who will eventually be forced to betray his friends. But it does give a little flavor to Kid Devil.

Shadowpact #8

Speaking of Shadowpact, this issue is a spotlight on Ragman, one of my favorite characters from the DC Implosion era. We get the story of Ragman’s costume and how it works. It’s good stuff, and it also ties into the story (unlike the Kid Devil origin, which is stand-alone).

52: Week Thirty-Three

Starfire is still alive.

Nightwing gives the gift of bat-gadgets to Batwoman, because nothing says Merry Christmas like well-balanced batarangs. This is why Nightwing gets all the action. I bet the Huntress will be pissed when she finds out how nicely they are treating the new vigilante on the block.

Some nice Christmas-y vignettes, with Luthor, the Question, the typical folks. For some reason, Hawkgirl is shown giving up crutches or something: wasn’t she 50 feet tall back in Week 8? I guess she got better.

I’m not sure why all the heroes were so surprised the Black Adam family were humans. Or were they surprised that they revealed that fact? I dunno.

This felt like a filler issue: nothing really happens, it’s more of the moving of chess pieces around type plot that gets really annoying in 52 week after week.

Birds of Prey #101

This comic nearly always delivers the goods: action, story, pacing, etc. The latest issue is no exception. The team (Barda, Judomaster, Huntress, Zinda, and Manhunter) does it’s usual job of misdirection under Oracle’s guidance, only to find that they’ve been out maneuvered by the Spy Smasher.

About the only thing that bothered me this issue was Big Barda’s new cleavage revealing armor, which just looks silly. But the mega-rod jokes were amusing enough.
